Service Learning

As part of our Girl Impact Program we work with African Impact to offer Academic Experiences for you and your school, including:

ACADEMIC INTERNSHIPS

A chance to draw from your academic studies and to gain experiential learning guided by professional and academic development advisers in Africa. Be challenged and supported as an extended member of the African Impact team.

Academic Internships with African Impact offer students an opportunity to tailor a progressively challenging work experience, with the support of an organization that provides hands-on orientation, training, supervision, reflection and feedback.

Academic Internships are valuable in that they allow the student to explore the interplay between the theoretical and what is being experienced – the key to experiential education. The nature of the work is both substantial and relevant to the goals of the communities and projects, allowing students to see the value of their contributions and to appreciate how it fits in the context of the field.

SERVICE LEARNING

Service Learning with African Impact is approached as a philosophy, a pedagogy, and a model for responsible and sustainable community development that can be effectively applied as a strategy to achieve specific and material learning goals.

Those joining a Service Learning project often encounter certain social challenges for the first time, which expands and transforms their views of the world, and of themselves. By applying knowledge in contrasting environments, with exposure to different cultures and ways of teaching, a student’s ability to learn, navigate obstacles and develop and apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills matures, promoting personal growth, leadership, teamwork and global citizenship.

SUMMER COURSES

Short-term faculty led programs are quickly becoming one of the most sought-after international study opportunities for students. These faculty led courses, which range from three to six weeks in duration, offer a number of benefits to participants.

Whereas semester and year-long programs are logistically and financially demanding, shorter term programs provide a more accessible opportunity to advance international education.

Students who join faculty led programs generally gain a much broader and deeper appreciation for the foundations of their chosen academia, and as a result, are able to grasp the desired learning outcomes quickly and more comprehensively than in the classroom. Learning outcomes are further cemented through practical application in the field, particularly when combined with challenges that require critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
